Nerd News Returns! Yes I’ve been lazy long enough and the news doesn’t stop, so here are some of the stories making headlines this week.
Get out of My House!:
Hey kids remember Playstation Home? No? Well that’s because it was failure from the start. It seems that Sony has now taken the hint and is axing the game in March next year with DLC stopping as soon as December. Playstation Home launched in December of 2008 and was one of the selling points for the PS3 during its launch two years before. Sony hoped to combine a solid line up of games with a Second Life like world to grab more players. The service however never gained traction with a large percentage of the PS3 users.
A New Hero:
I’ve been a fan and avid user of the GoPro Hero 3+Black for a year. It’s high quality, small and easy to use. I’ve even shot some promotional stuff for may day job and Hands On Music on it, but now the camera is out of date. This week they announced the debut of the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and Black additions. While there isn’t a huge difference between the 3+Black and the 4 Silver (the real difference being the built in touch screen and better audio recording) the Black addition features 4K recording with a 30 frame maximum, making your skateboarding/snowboarding/just about everything else video even more impressive. The GoPro Hero 4 Silver starts at $399 and the Black at $499.
Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix Together again:
Quick question; have you seen the Master? If not, see it and you’ll understand why I’m looking forward to Anderson and Phoenix’s newest film, Inherent Vice. The film follows Phoenix’s character, a private eye who brought into a kidnapping case. The film also features Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Resse Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro and of course Martin Short. The film comes out in December.
They Killed His Dog and Stole His Car, They’ll Never Make That Mistake Again:
Let’s get one thing straight, the upcoming Keanu Reeves film, John Wick looks amazing. The film follow Reeves as the titual retired mob hitman brought back into the game after his dog (which was a gift from his dead wife) is killed and his car is stolen. He then goes on a killer rampage to eliminate those who messed with him. So this film scores a 10 on the ridicules scale but looks like a lot of fun. The film also feature Willem Defoe, Ian McShane and Alfie Allen (Theon from Game of Thrones). The film runs and shoots it’s way into theatres on October 24th (expect a review).
Taken 3: Why Not?:
While the idea of Keanu Reeves killing to avenge his dog is amazing, the idea of Liam Neeson returning for the third Taken film is kinda boring. As you’d expect Neeson returns as Taken guy (I know he has a name but who cares) who this time is framed for the murder of his (ex?) wife by some evil people. He’s then chased by the police led by Forest Whitaker in a film that sounds like two parts The Fugitive and one part Frantic. Also the title is written as Tak3n, which is just silly. The trilogy is complete on January 9 of next year.
Poke battles on your iPad?:
Ever wanted to take your Pokemon card game with you, but were too embarrassed to having Pokemon cards near you? Then Pokemon TCG Online is for you. The game is a digital version of the popular card game that can be played on your computer and iPad. While this would be big news for some, I’m more amazed the card game is still around and more of less the same. Even Yu-Gi-Oh! had to spice things up with motorcycles. Does this mean that there’s a Magic: The Gathering game coming? If not, there’s only one way to react.
Firestorm Are Go?
I’m a big fan of Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds series. It was goofy, had a cool concept and used a lot of film technics you wouldn’t expect with a puppet based show. Now his son Jamie is looking to revive one of his old projects. Gerry Anderson’s Firestorm was a concept that eventually lead to an anime series in 2003 produced by TransArt. Now Jamie is looking to adapt his fathers original vision in his more traditional, but updated, style now called ULTRAMARIONATION! The project has a Kickstarter and is coming along well so far. Think about kicking some money in if your fan.
This past week Netflix signed a deal that depending on your point of view was either a great or awful. The streaming service announced its partnership with filmmaker Adam Sadler for four films. While this might make my skin crawl it makes sense from a business side as Sandler’s Happy Madison studio makes films that turn decent profits 9 times out of 10.
To Fat to Stack
The Lego video game series has grown a great deal since its Star Wars days. With a major film in the past now they look towards their next game Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. Now it seems some casting news from the game had come forward. Not only will Arrow star Stephen Amell play Green Arrow but both Geoff Johns and Kevin Smith will be playable characters as well. While their inclusion is cool, it leaves me wondering what Smith’s power will be? Snappy but kinda dated dialogue? Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham hits stores on November 11.
All the Intensity of a man Lying down:
It’s been a solid week for trailers, and the video for American Sniper might be the most intense. The film, staring Bradly Cooper and directed by Clint Eastwood, is based upon the autobiography of the same name by Chris Kyle. The film looks dark, intense and exciting. If the trailer is any indication then this one could be a hard to miss. American Sniper starts on Christmas Day.
The CTRC is still looking into the WWE Networks arrival into Canada through Rogers. Speaking of WWE, their California Dreamin’ WrestleMania 31 ticket packs are on sale on Oct 6. While David Fincher is set to release a film this weekend (look for a review really soon) he’s going to be working on TV series. The director announced he’ll be directing the first season of the American Utopia remake. The horror film SAW will be getting a Halloween re-release. It’s ten years old…I feel old now. The Weinstein Company and Netflix will be teaming together to release Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon:The Green Legend next year. The film will air both in IMAX Theatres and on Netflix at the same time. Donald Glover joins the cast of Magic Mike XXL…yep. Speaking of former Community stars, Yvette Nicole Brown leaves the show to look after her sick father. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star in a Baywatch film. I can only hope it turns out like this. Star Wars Rebels has already been renewed for a second season despite not airing yet. Nicholas D’Agosto has been cast as Harvey Dent in Gotham. There’s a sweet looking Big Lebowski Pinball machine now on the market.
