Before their was Evangelion or even Gundam there was a show based around a WWII battleship traveling through space defending Earth.
The show, would become the benchmark for not only anime but all science fiction that would come after it.
Whether you know it as Star Blazers, Star Cruiser or it’s original name Space Battleship Yamato there’s a good chance you’ve heard of it.
Co-created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto (and partially directed by Noboru Ishiguro), it became one of the most popular anime titles in Japan. The title would span several series, films and reboots/spin-offs and would influence a whole generation of anime creators down the line (Hideaki Anno for example).
While the creators would later end up in a legal battle, 2014 marks the 40 anniversary of the franchise.
So, to honour the franchise I’m going to be review the Yamato franchise, starting with the first compilation film and ending with the recent reboot/remake Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
It’s going to be a long year so please follow the blog and wait for the posts to come.
