Anime is not very universal. While there are titles that can be watched by all audiences and praised for its story and animation, a large portion of what’s published is meant for Otaku and not Joe Public.
This isn’t a bad thing; it just put’s shows like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt into perspective. For those of you who don’t watch anime (and for some who do), this is gonna be weird.
At first look you might not even realize that this show is from Japan as it features a more North American animation style with cartoonish looking characters.
However, look again and it all becomes clear that Panty and Stocking is one of those crazy Gainax titles featuring multiple art styles, crazy characters and plots.
The series revolves around two angels who were kicked out of heaven for bad behavior. The two; Panty, a blond who’s main interest revolves around getting laid, and her sister Stocking, a Goth girl with a sweet tooth, are ordered by their handler Garterbelt to kill demons called Ghosts. The more they kill the more Heaven coins they collect. Once the hit a certain number of these coins they can go back to heaven.
But how do they kill these demons? Why with magical underwear…I wish I were kidding. The two use their respective skivvies to summon guns and swords and to destroy bad guys.
So, you’ve just read that blurb and your either thinking a) “That’s amazing, I need to watch this!” or b) “WTF did I just read?”
The show has been described as Powerpuff Girls with a dirty mouth and that is kind of true. The show feels a great deal like many of the Cartoon Networks shows from the late 90s but instead of family friendly content it’s well…this.
The one major thing PSG has going for it is its style. Every episode is fast, off the wall and for the most part entertaining.
Each episode features two or more stories that for the most part revolve around the two teaming up to kill Ghosts in more and more crazy ways. Other episodes revolve around more character driving plots such as Panty starting her acting career…cause that just makes sense.
The animation as mentioned before is very different with it ranging from a cartoony look to a traditional anime look for the transformation scenes. The thing that really stands out are the deaths of the Ghost, which switch to real models of the Ghosts that is blown up. This really looks cool.
The dialogue of this show is very one note. Most of the show is spent by making sex and poop jokes with a heaping helping of curse words, so make sure the kids are out of the room before you watching.
This attitude kind of makes the show drag after a while. I watched a lot of these episode one right after the other and was kind of drained afterwards.
It both helps and hurts the show. It starts very fresh but ends up feeling a bit like a 10 year olds adaptation of a Kevin Smith film.
However, the show is very funny, you just have to be in the right mood for its shenanigans.
Its raunchy and crazy. But in the end the show is just fluff. Dirty, dirty fluff.
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is based upon a Manga written by Omara and was published in Young Ace by Kadokawa Shoten. The series was made by Gainax studio and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. The show is licensed by Manga Entertainment in Austrian and Funimation Entertainment is North America.
PS Be careful when you type this show into your Google Images search…just a heads up.
