So a while ago Playboy interviewed Grant Morrison. During the interview he made a number of comments, the biggest one being that he wrote Batman as gay. Why? Cause he’s Grant Morrison and doesn’t give a f*ck.
Here’s the quote:
“He’s very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant. Gayness is built into Batman. I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay.”
The idea of Batman being gay isn’t a new one as it origins can be traced back to a book written by Fredric Wertham in the 50s called the Seduction of the Innocent. While a lot of people believed him, today if you look back at it, Wertham ideas are outdated.
For example, in the book he deduced that because Wonder Woman was a strong independent woman that she must be a lesbian. He also claimed that Superman was a fascist. So you see that his ideas are outdated.
Now when it comes to Morrison, I can understand where he’s coming from to a point.
Why would a rich man, who can spend all of his time with beautiful woman, hang around with a boy in primary colours?
Despite this the idea of writing a character off, as one thing is very narrow minded. Just to say that because you think he’s gay doesn’t mean that he’s gay to someone else. The reader or even another writer may have a very different opinion of the character.
Futhermore if Morrison wrote Bruce as a gay character, why didn’t anyone notice?. He wasn’t depicted in a gay relationship so how did he write Batman as gay? I’m guessing the DC bullpen wouldn’t let it be published but if he hadn’t told anyone in this interview, no one would of noticed or cared.
The question I have from this interview is simply: “Who cares?” It’s 2012 I don’t care if my best friend is gay, let alone a character that I’ve been reading for my whole life.
Morrison is free to say and write whatever he wants, but it seems odd to me that he would come out and make a statement like this. This seems more like something that Alan Moore would say in an interview, but with Moore despite his success he’s still balls to the wall insane although maybe Morrison isn’t far off from funny farm either.
