When I first heard the song North Side Gal, I was at work. I didn’t pay much attention to it at first, due to the fact I was working but for the rest of the day, the song stuck in my head. It wasn’t until later that day when I started looking JD McPherson up when I noticed the genius of what he was doing. McPherson recorded the song and a album in a studio in Chicago. The studio in HiStyle records uses a series of Ribbon Microphones, tube mixers and pre-amps and records music onto 1/4 inch tape. The method gives the song a retro feel. This along with McPherson’s sound make the music sound like it something that Sun Records would have recorded in the 50s.
